It made me extremely resentful when her significant other as well as her sibling, both doctors, shrugged her affliction for absence of a superior word off as nothing since it was something they couldn't comprehend. I think a great deal of this needs to do with the way that they are surely men. I additionally believe that piece of hermadness is because of the way that she is kept in a room in which she hates the yellow backdrop. As it were, I surmise I consider it to be a nearly claustrophobia. I used to experience the ill effects of claustrophobia and the one thing I saw to be comparative is that it is frightfully simple to pick one piece of the room and fixate on it. The yellow backdrop was an image of her ensnarement. Anyway it isn't just he physical ensnarement yet in addition a psychological capture, she has an unbelieving spouse (as per her) and she as of late conceived an offspring and she should feel some of the passionate strings associated with such an occasion. She should feel very overpowered and utilized. He continues disclosing to her that she'll be fine as long as she eats right, and gets a lot of rest and work out, anyway he does not have the capacity to comprehend that her concern are most certainly not physical. He got rid of as much DNA as he could; scrubbed his body to get rid of loose skin cells, wore contacts, planted fake DNA around his workplace (like Jeromeââ¬â ¢s hair), glued a false thumb with Jeromeââ¬â¢s DNA and blood, etc. 7)à à à à à Who is murdered in this film? Irene is ashamed and believes that she cannot do anything about it because it lies in her genetic material, but Vincent believes that he can change who he is by pretending to be someone else to achieve his dream. 10)à What ultimately happened to Anton? Why? Anton and Vincent played one of their childhood games ââ¬â to see who can swim the farthest from the shore without turning back ââ¬â for one last time, to prove to Vincent that Anton will always be the faster, better, stronger brother. But Anton cannot continue, and loses strength, therefore he drowns, and Vincent ends up saving his life. Anton realized that even though Vincent is an invalid, he is very much capable of surpassing everyoneââ¬â¢s expectations. 11)à If Anton was genetically superior to Vincent, why was their ultimate fate so different? Vincent always had the determination, the passion, and the drive to reach his goal, to achieve, and to (again), surpass everyoneââ¬â¢s expectations. Anton figured that since he was genetically superior, he did not have to try as hard when going up against his brother. But with the willpower, and the strength, and the support from Jerome, Vincent was able to get up to Antonââ¬â¢s level of genetic superiority, even exceeding it since he ended up saving Antonââ¬â¢s life. 12)à What is the relationship between Vincent and his brother? How is it ultimately resolved? In their younger years, they were always competitive, and Anton always felt more superior to Vincent because of his ââ¬Å"amazingâ⬠genetics, and this means that Anton was always favored. In the end, Vincent ends up saving his brother from drowning, and this shows that Vincent once again proved that he was worthy of Antonââ¬â¢s respect. 3)à What is the significance of the word ââ¬Å"Gattacaâ⬠? The movie revolves around human genetics; DNA. The letters G T A C represent the initial DNA bases in our genetic structures. Part II (Put a little more thought into answering these questions) 1. How is the relationship between Vincent and his brother Anton like and unlike th e relationship between Vincent and Jerome? Jerome is willing to help Vincent achieve his dreams by giving him pieces of his identity, whereas Anton has always tried to crush Vincent; to be superior to him in every way. 2. How are the swimming scenes between Vincent and Anton related to Jeromeââ¬â¢s career in swimming? Jerome was a former swimming star who only won a silver medal in an important competition, and this caused Jerome to give up and try to commit suicide. I think this relates to the swimming scenes between Vincent and Anton because whenever Vincent and Anton would race in the waters to see who would turn back first, Vincent would always come in second place (silver medal). 3. What name does Jerome choose for himself? Is there any significance to this name? Jerome wants to be called by his middle name: Eugene. With esearch on the internet, I have found that Eugene comes from the Greek word meaning ââ¬Å"well-bornâ⬠, which is a huge symbol in the movie. Also, ââ¬Å"eugenicsâ⬠is the science of improving the genetic qualities of a species, which is also very interesting. 4. Do Vincent and Jerome stick to their new names consistently through the film, or are there moments when t hey revert to their original names? It is very rare that they use their original names since Vincent is practically becoming Jerome (taking his identity). 5. As the story unfolds, Jeromeââ¬â¢s behavior and especially his remarks about himself reveal a great deal . How would you describe his character? In this movie, the society only valued ââ¬Ëperfectââ¬â¢ individuals, which means they had a bright future according to their DNA. Jerome realized he would never be seen as ââ¬Ëhumanââ¬â¢ again because he became crippled after trying to commit suicide. In a way he was broken, and the only valuable thing about him was his genetic code, even though he couldnââ¬â¢t achieve anything with it anymore. I believe that is why Jerome was so negative; he had a future with his perfect genetic structure, and was supposed to achieve all kinds of things based on his DNA, but now he was considered ââ¬Ëimperfectââ¬â¢. Letting Vincent achieve his dreams through Jerome was basically his last possible contribution; he found something/someone that he could help in his broken state, and after that he saw that he had no reason to continue living in a world with those morals, regulations and views, therefore he committed suicide at the end of the movie. What is the psychological burden under which Anton and Jerome labor? Does this burden seem sufficient to motivate their actions? Jerome has the psychological burden of being ââ¬Ëimperfectââ¬â¢ in a world where the society only accepts individuals with perfect DNAââ¬â¢s to achieve great things. . One of the central images in the film is the staircase in Vincent and Jeromeââ¬â¢s home. Do you notice anything about this staircase? Is there any significance to Jeromeââ¬â¢s struggle to climb it? The staircase resembles a DNA strand; the double helix (one of the biggest symbols in the film). The staircase, and the fact that Jerome/Eugene struggled to climb them, represents his struggle to overcome his physical limits (wheelchair), just like Vincent had to overcome his physical limits (bad DNA). 7. Is there really anything wrong with the Directorââ¬â¢s position that Gattaca has the right ââ¬Å"recruitment philosophyâ⬠? Is the Director right that ââ¬Å"no one exceeds his potentialâ⬠? From a business point it is considered acceptable; in order to have a successful business, you must gather the elites of the individuals. But in a society, this is considered discrimination. This is relatable to our societies because we discriminate against race, genders, IQ, etc, and is one of todayââ¬â¢s most frowned-upon discussions, even though we all discriminate in some way without realizing it. 8. Does the medical technician fail to do his job by letting Vincent on to the space ship? I honestly donââ¬â¢t believe so, because we learn that the doctorââ¬â¢s son has a genetic heart defect, like Vincent. And the fact that the doctor let Vincent on the space ship, along with the quote that ââ¬Å"his son admires Vincentâ⬠suggests that his son also wants to go up to space someday, and because his son looks up to Vincent, refusing to let Vincent on the space ship because of his defect would be like refusing to let his son carry out his dreams. 9. What are Vincentââ¬â¢s relationships with his father and mother like? How does it affect Vincentââ¬â¢s life? Vincentââ¬â¢s family, including his brother, considered him to be chronically ill. His parents, especially his mother, became very protective of him and every childhood illness was treated as it was life threatening because of all the possibilities for multiple conditions, diseases, disorders, etc. This affected Vincentââ¬â¢s life because he grew up to want to prove to everybody that despite the problems and possibilities, he could still succeed. Part III- Quotations (again, take a little more time on this section) Choose 10 of the following quotations and explain in your own words what they mean as they relate to the film: 1. Vincent: I was never more certain of how far away I was from my goal than when I was standing right beside it. 2. Vincent: They used to say that a child conceived in love has a greater chance of happiness. They dont say that anymore. Vincent was born in love and in care (his parents made sure he was always safe and treated every little mishap as something life-threatening), but it wasnââ¬â¢t enough to be brought up with such love because he doesnââ¬â¢t have the physical or genetic attributes to work at Gattaca/to accomplish his dreams since he has the heart defect. Also, sometimes we make our own happiness, by the choices we make or the experiences we go through. 3. Vincent: We now have discrimination down to a science. This is said because in the film, nobody cares what you look like; all they need is your DNA (urine, hair sample, eyelashes, etc) for identification. If your DNA shows that you have a heart problem, for example, you will not be qualified for the job at Gattaca. 4. Jerome: I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body you lent me your dream. Jerome believed that without a working body, he couldnââ¬â¢t accomplish his dream of getting a ââ¬Å"gold medalâ⬠because of his physical limitation, so he gave up parts of his identity and genetic profile to Vincent, so that Vincent could fulfill his dreams of being a ââ¬Å"validâ⬠. In a way, Jerome lived through Vincent, and in a way, Jeromeââ¬â¢s dreams were coming true just like Vincentââ¬â¢s were coming true, and Jerome received the satisfaction in knowing that Vincentââ¬â¢s dreams were fulfilled in the end. 5. Vincent: [voiceover] For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess Im suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe Im not leaving maybe Im going home. 6. Antonio: Son, the only way youre going to see the inside of a space shuttle is if youre cleaning it. Antonio said this to Vincent because he knew about his heart problems, therefore Antonio knew that Vincent wouldnââ¬â¢t be able/capable of getting into the Gattaca space program as an astronaut because of his heart problem. Therefore, the only way Vincent will see the inside of the space shuttle will be if heââ¬â¢s cleaning it. 7. Vincent: Is the only way you can succeed is to see me fail? . Vincent: Blood has no nationality I think this suggests that blood is blood ââ¬â despite the artificial and genetic changes we can impose on ourselves, we all basically have the same blood. In this movie, people are discriminated by their future abilities based on their DNA/blood. But in reality, people are judged because of their race, features, looks, money value, etc. So, simplistically, this quote is saying that we are all the same on the inside ââ¬â we are all composed of genetic material and really, there is no need for discrimination. 9. Dr. Lamar: I still havent told you about my son have I? Hes a big fan of yours The doctor mentions his son early in the movie, and at the end of the movie we find out that the son is also engineered yet flawed in his DNA. The doctor repeatedly mentions his son which suggests that the doctor has always known about Vincent being a ââ¬Ëborrowed ladderââ¬â¢. 10. Vincent: You are the authority on what is not possible, arent you Irene? Theyve got you looking for any flaw, that after a while thats all you see. For what its worth, Im here to tell you that it is possible. It is possible. This quote shows that society has convinced Irene that because she is flawed in one way, she is not worth anything; that she is not and will not be capable of achieving her dreams because of that one flaw. Because of the genetic ââ¬Å"defectâ⬠, whatââ¬â¢s on the outside does not matter. Her dreams, hopes, ambitions do not matter because she will be unable to achieve them, just because of that one flaw. Vincent is trying to show her that she is worth more than she thinks, and that it IS possible to overcome that flaw, because he is doing just that. 11. Vincent: Its funny, you work so hard, you do everything you can to get away from a place, and when you finally get your chance to leave, you find a reason to stay. 12. Vincent: Ill never understand what possessed my mother to put her faith in Gods hands, rather than her local geneticist. Vincent will never understand why his mother chose to take a chance with his hereditary ââ¬Å"failuresâ⬠rather than pay to fix them to make him the best he could be by genetically improving his genes. 13. Caesar: Dont clean the glass too well. Vincent: Whys That? Caesar: You might get ideas. 14. Title Card: Consider Gods handiwork; who can straighten what He hath made crooked? Ecclesiastes 7:13 I believe this quote means ââ¬Å"who decides who can correct the imperfections that God gave you? â⬠Basically, it means that the societyââ¬â¢s views (in the movie and in real life) has become so twisted that we feel like we must ââ¬Å"fixâ⬠what has been purposely made broken. Everyone has imperfections, but we are meant to accept them and live with them. No one is perfect, but people in this film (and in our world) believe that they have the permission to tamper with our genetics in order to make ourselves ââ¬Å"betterâ⬠. 15. Title Card: I not only think that we will tamper with Mother Nature, I think Mother wants us to. Willard Gaylin 16. Vincent: [voiceover] Eugeneââ¬â¢s burden was of a different variety. His was the burden of perfection. Jeromeââ¬â¢s burden was being born perfect, but becoming only second best. Jerome was a natural at everything, and was good at whatever he attempted. This made him unmotivated to do anything. He was born with ââ¬Å"an IQ off the register, better than 20/20 vision in both eyes and the heart of an oxâ⬠, but in a swimming competition he received only second place, which gave him the mindset of not being good enough. As said before, he had a very good future with his perfect genes and was supposed to achieve many amazing things, but now, after running in front of a moving car, he was left crippled, and basically all the chances and possibilities of him achieving anything ââ¬Å"greatâ⬠, was thrown out the window. 17. The Mission Director: No one exceeds his potential. Detective: And if he does? The Mission Director: It simply means that we did not accurately gauge his potential in the first place. judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172967280737999510.post-77987915175319468552020-04-15T08:12:00.001-07:002020-04-15T08:12:02.242-07:00Television And Society Essays - English-language Films, Television And Society Television In our society, we like to think of the television as nothing more of a form of entertainment. But do we really believe that? Maybe when television was first introduced, that is all that it was. That certainly is not the case today. It tells us what to buy, what to wear, how to act, even how to think. In other words, people are relying too much on television as a source of information. There are very few television stations that are black oriented. This hurts blacks because it causes them to lose race pride and to conform. More and more, they lose their pride and start taking in more information that whites provide to them. On television, there are white women with straight, blond hair, tiny noses, and a skinny figure. This is the ?worst sort of Americanism?(Early, 225). When a black woman straightens her hair, this is because she thinks that she will look better if she does this. But who tells her this? The commercials on television that now have black women who do not look so black anymore. This connects to one of the essays that I read by stating, ?when offered a choice between a black doll and a white doll, little black girls invariably chose the white doll because they thought it ?prettier? '(Early, 226). This causes psychological damage to black girls because they will never think they are pretty enough until they are white. Toni Morrison writes, ?Adults, older girls, shops, magazines, newspapers, window signs----all the world had agreed that a blue eyed, yellow-haired, pink-skinned doll was what every girl treasured.? (Early, 225) They took this information in from things just like television, which are all run by whites in a white world. Television is starting to get better for blacks in some ways, but also even worse. There are stations that are not trying to unite the blacks and move ahead. Black Entertainment Television is a very good example of trying to unite the black community. Just look at the title of the station. If you are black, you are much more likely to tune into B.E.T. than if you were any other race. So this station knows what their following is, and through shows on their station and commercials, they try to get blacks to think the way the station wants them to think. For example, I saw a commercial on B.E.T. about the presidential election, but instead of including both the democratic symbol (donkey) and the republican symbol (elephant), they only included the donkey. This is telling the viewers that the only choice for blacks is democrats; the republicans have nothing to offer them. This is good because it helps the blacks to unite and all make the same choice, but it bothers me more because I fee l that blacks should explore the issues and make a choice for themselves, not just listen to what the television is telling them. This hurts blacks because it has them not thinking for themselves. Paige is someone who I had known for a long time. She lived across the street from me ever since I was five and we have stayed close friends the whole time. I always thought that she was very pretty, but she thought otherwise. She felt that her nose was too long, and it made her look ugly. I could understand why she thought this because all you ever see on commercials and fashion shows is beautiful women with tiny little noses and they were considered beautiful. She did not look at anything other than those models on TV as being pretty. She felt she would never find the right guy for her because her nose would turn them off. I know this sounds ridiculous, but she really believed it, and nothing would change her thinking unless she had a nose job. In Jaclyn Geller's essay, ?The Celebrity Bride as Culture Icon? she stresses the fact that sexuality is playing too important of a role in love. One line is, ?Her attire is that of a contemporary bride envisioned as a dependent, sexual toy.? (Geller, 280) Paige did not feel like she could be a dependent, sexual toy with her judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172967280737999510.post-46668301857552340212020-03-12T13:49:00.001-07:002020-03-12T13:49:03.199-07:00Quotations on Mothers and MotherhoodQuotations on Mothers and Motherhood Some quotes from notable women on motherhood, mothering, mothers, family, and children. Other people may find Adult and Community Education courses to be rewarding because of the fact that they can achieve more personal or communal aims. Adult and Community Education proves to be a fine alterative for grown-ups who aim for informal type of learning. Sargant presented a study of UK provision according to which one of six persons try to gain knowledge informally; that may be at home, at vocation, or anywhere else (1991: 15).The literature and the practice of Adult and Community Education also include target groups. This is particularly the case in Australia (Sheared & Sissel, 2001). These target groups are conventionally seen as minorities, or those persons who have been disenfranchised due to past circumstances of domination and segregation. The idea of target groups hap pens to be a main principle of Australian educational policy and lies on the supposition of a steady core. The Australian Adult and Community Education (ACE) policy recognizes certain classes of adults who are not properly represented in employment and training. They require additional sufficient and approachable stipulation so as to assist them in fulfilling their needs. The categories are (Adult, Community and Further Education, 2004): Koories; Men aged over 45; People with a disability; People from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; Young people aged15 and over; and People aged over 55 These groups of people specifically require Adult and Community Education so as to help them on with surviving properly. Adult and Community Education results in plenty of advantages for the learners and they have major impact on their development. For example, Adult and Community Education can lead to social and economic welfare of people as well as the communities, it can produce social output and lifelong learning can be promoted through Adult and Community Education (Centre for Research and Learning in Regional Australia, n.d.). Therefore, it is important that equity groups also get an equal chance in participating in Adult and Community Education so as to improve themselves. For this reason there are boards and groups that enable this. One such is the Adult, Community and Further Education Board (ACFE) which encourages education and training for a variety of people, along with specially focussing on those who are included in the equity groups, that is, those who do not have full access to education. Around 450 community-owned and directed organisations are entitled to pass over adult and community education with ACFE Board funding. The government assists in Adult and Community Education provision. Since quite a few years the government has engaged itself a lot in Adult and Community Education, and it did this by providing the organisations with enough funds so as to allow them to educate the people. This has been very important and has enabled to broaden the position of Adult and Communi judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172967280737999510.post-59097316907161624772020-02-08T21:01:00.001-08:002020-02-08T21:01:03.456-08:00Columbian Exposition Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 wordsColumbian Exposition - Essay Example The fairââ¬â¢s lead architect and overseer of the design and planning of the fairââ¬â¢s main buildings were Daniel Burnham. These massive, neoclassical structures came to be known, commonly, as the White City. Despite their elegant appearance, the buildings were made from wood frames wrapped in staff, a plaster mixture that creates the illusion of stone (Rydell and Wells-Barnet, 33). The White City was lasting for not more than six months. The exhibition closed in late October 1893 and that winter, almost all of the buildings came down due to the massive fire. The documents that follow present the history of the Columbian Exposition in comparison to the history of Chicago. The soc, Bob Sheldon, dies first. When Ponyboy and Johnny flee after Darry hit Ponyboy they run into their rivals Bob and his best friend Randy Adderson. Bob takes Ponyboy and starts drowning him until Johnny gets his switchblade out and kills Bob. After this, Johnny dies. Dally (a greaser with a criminal record) sends Ponyboy and Johnny to an abandoned church so they can hide after what they did. When they go to leave after a few days, the church catches on fire with a few elementary school kids trapped inside, so they go into the church to save them. When Johnny gets the last kid out, a piece of the roof falls on his back, breaking it. The last death is Dally. After Johnny dies, Dally goes crazy and robs a store. The police chase him and shoot him down because he pulled out a gun at them. As you can see at the beg inning of the novel, the brothers are constantly getting into arguments about stupid little things, but after Darry hits Ponyboy, things change. After these deaths, Ponyboyââ¬â¢s grades start dropping and he starts to lose sight of himself. Him and Darry get into many more arguments until Sodapop Curtis tells them to promise to stop arguing because itââ¬â¢s tearing him apart. They both agree and it makes their relationship really strong at the end of the novel. Although the Curtis brothers do not have a close relationship at the beginning of the novel, after experiencing the deaths of Bob, Johnny, and Dally, it makes their relationship stronger. The first death that occurs is of Bob Sheldon. After Ponyboy comes home from a late light with some of the soc girls, Darry ... ...n they are in the hospital when Johnny, Ponyboy and Dally return from Windrixville and Johnny is dying. Ponyboy realizes that Darry does actually care about him; he is just strict because he wants him to be better. At that point Ponyboy thinks that everything is going to be all right because he understands Darry now, but it just goes back to normal with all of the arguing. Finally Sodapop steps in after Dally dies and everyone is sad and feeling helpless. He tells Darry and Ponyboy to promise to never argue again because he doesnââ¬â¢t like it, and they agree. All of these conflicts in the novel ââ¬Å"The Outsidersâ⬠started with Darry hitting Ponyboy in the face. This lead to many different relationship problems between the Curtis brothers and three deaths that made the relationship very strong. Work Cited Hinton, S. E. The Outsiders. Puffin: New York, 1997. Subtopic 1: oneââ¬â¢s value, habits and loyalty to his culture and tradition are not easily changed. Example:ââ¬Å" But we collect for the heart, Kiam-Kim,â⬠Father said. ââ¬Å"We help all the people of China. â⬠I was puzzled. ââ¬Å"Even those who kill other Chinese? â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Father said. ââ¬Å"Of course. â⬠ââ¬Å"But never help the Japanese? â⬠ââ¬Å"Never. â⬠(Page 208) Explanation: This discussion is between Kiam-Kim and his father, which is a Chinese family in Canada for a long time. At that time, there is just a war between China and Japanese, and Kiam-Kim, who is the main character in the novel, is collecting money for the donation of Chinese soldiers. Kiam-Kim thinks this money is for blankets, medical supplies, food for orphans but not for bullets or guns. Because at that time, Kiam-Kim just 9 years old, his childââ¬â¢s mind wants everyone in peace but not in war. But in fact, there are so many wars in China. Not only between Chinese people but also between China and Japan. When he asks his father about what these denotation is for, his father tells him that is for all Chinese people including the people who is fighting with another Chinese people. Because of the hatred of Japan, his father never wants to give anything to Japan. That proves that he will never help his countryââ¬â¢s enemy because of his loyalty of China . Subtopic 2: Oneââ¬â¢s culture can have a profound hold on oneââ¬â¢s personality, gravity influencing a course of behavior. Example: ââ¬Å"Teach Jung-sum how to kick and pass the ball,â⬠Father said to me. ââ¬Å"Canada never need soldiers. â⬠ââ¬Å"Need soldiers in China,â⬠Poh-Poh said, slapping the last bandage on my arm. She poured her stinging homemade lotion on one of Jungââ¬â¢s battle wounds. ââ¬Å"Fight the warlords!Fight the Japanese! â⬠(Page 230 ) Explanation: Poh-Poh is an old lady from old China; she used to be in China for such a long time so the impression of Chinaââ¬â¢s culture has a important part in her life. Although she is in Canada, but she still memorizes the Old China and cares about the things happening here. When the war between China and Japan is broken out, she is always worried about the Old Chinaââ¬â¢s situation although there is not any war in Canada, so no soldiers are needed. But Kiam-Kimââ¬â¢s father said ââ¬Å"Canada never needs soldiersâ⬠. Poh-Poh thinks about her country, the old China, which needs so many soldiers to attend to the war. So she said ââ¬Å" Need soldiers in China! â⬠because the culture of China has such a influence to her. Subtopic 3: We are all placed in a category and perceived in a certain way become of our backgroundââ¬â¢s culture, and the human aspect of prejudgment will probably never changed. Example: Overnight, the news ran through Chinatown. Perfect Meiying had given herself to a Japanese boy. She had to do something and failed terribly. She had bled to death. Two ambulance arrived, and a crowd gathered to watch them take away the bundled body. Explanation: When the war between China and Japan becomes more and more intensely, every Chinese people including the aboard hate Japan because Japan invade their land and attack their compatriots. But Meiying, who is a wonderful girl in Chinatown, has a boyfriend as a Japanese people. In that time, it is such a terrible thing because the Chinese people believe that people who has communication with Japanese is a traitor. Meiying keeps the secret for such a long time but finally it is exposed so she can not be under this hard pressure and also don't want to Implicate her parents so she decides to kill herself. So at that time, people think all Japanese people are bad and harmful and attribute them into a category which is bad. So whether the people is good or bad, if he is a Japanese, he will be judged into a harmful people. judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172967280737999510.post-22818915409912316562020-01-05T14:01:00.001-08:002020-01-05T14:01:03.846-08:00Benefits of Music Essay - 1038 Words Music ââ¬Å"Music is enough for a lifetime, but a lifetime is not enough for music.â⬠These were the words of Sergei Rachmaninoff, a Russian composer and pianist who was very influential in the twentieth century. Everybody knows what music is and they all have heard a form of it but most people underestimate the value and power music has in our everyday lives. This form of lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes a chronic inflammation that can affect many major organs in the body. Common areas of the body that are affected are the skin, joints, kidneys, lungs, heart, and the nervous system. The immune system is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs, and other foreign substances. The immune system produces proteins called antibodies. Antibodies specifically protect the body from the invaders because the immune system alone cannot tell the difference between foreign invaders and the bodyââ¬â¢s healthy tissues. When an antibody attacks healthy tissue, it then called an autoantibody. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body that can ultimately lead to organ failure. The cause for lupus erythematosus is currently unknown. I t is most likely a combination of genetics and environmental factors. This autoimmune disease can be triggered by some environmental factors, such as sunlight, stress hormones, or viruses. The majority of patients with lupus are Hispanic and African American females within their child-bearing ages. There is no cure for lupus, but it can be treated to control symptoms and relieve discomfort. PSYCHOLOGICAL SCIENCE Research Article IMPLICIT ATTITUDE FORMATION THROUGH CLASSICAL CONDITIONING Michael A. Olson and Russell H. Fazio Indiana University Abstract-We sought to demonstrate that attitudes can develop through implicit covariation detection in a new classical conditioning paradigm. In two experiments purportedly about surveillance and vigilance. participants viewed several hundred randomly presented words and images interspersed with critical pairings ofvalenced unconditioned stimuli (USs) with novel conditioned stimuli (CSs). Attitudes toward the novel objects were influenced by the paired USs: In a surprise evaluation task. the CS paired with positive items was evaluated more positively than the CS paired withâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦From the development of racial prejudice through repeated media portrayals of minority-group members in a negative fashion, to the creation of brand preferences via pairings of a target product with supennodels, the case might appear closed based on intuition alone. Yet, although early research seemed to support the contention that classical conditioning is a primary origin of attitud es (e.g., Razran, 1938; Staats Staats. 1958). research on the classical conditioning of attitudes has since suffered a sporadic and troubled history. Through the present research, we hoped to provide more solid evidence that attitudes can develop implicitly via classical conditioning. First. we touch on some of the problems of past research. and mention some noteworthy attempts at solving them. The present research developed a new paradigm to help answer the question of whether attitudes can develop implicitly via classical conditioning. Address correspondence to Michael A. Why?5.Do you agree with Singers contention that To avoid speciesism we must stop this practice (commercial meat production) and each of us has a moral obligation to cease supporting this practise? Why? Answers: 1. Racism refers to the structural abuse and oppression of the rights of other individuals based on not only race, but also based on religion and ethnicity. Racism is usually regarded as being egregiously morally wrong since race is actually a morally arbitrary characteristic on which to base the abuse or giving of rights. On the other hand, racism is different from speciesism in that speciesism refers to the systematic de-prioritization, ignorance, and disregard for the general interests of other species such as animals. According to Singer (Braun, 2008), it is argued that the treatment of animals in manners that human beings cannot be treated is indeed egregiously morally wrong. Singer further argues that the use of animals for research or for farming purposes leads to infliction of suffering which is unjustifiable on animals. Such kind of suffering, regardless of the benefit to be achieved, is actually morally unjustifiable. My position is that racism cannot be equated to speciesism and therefore by rejecting racism, one must not also reject speciesism. However, this does not necessarily imply that animals should not be treated with respect but instead animals should never have claim on the human species. However, the human population should only have a moral obligation of ensuring a reduction in animal suffering (Kagan, 2016). In essence, it can truly be asserted that racism is the structural abuse and oppression of rights that is based on race and is thus insipid since it actually infringes on the rights of rational actors in a moral society or community thus causing suffering and even reducing general happiness. It is not a must for people rejecting racism to reject speciesism because animals should never deserve the equal status accorded to human beings. This is because individuals of different races in the world cannot be distinct from each other through their average capabilities but instead, people are truly distinct from other animals in ways that are morally relevant. Speciesism occurs to an extent that human beings can ignore animals interests, but however, they can never have rights thus speciesism is not actually as bad as racism is. 2. The idea of Equal Consideration of interests means that for any entity which has interests, then such interests should be regarded as being morally vital with the similar interests that belong to another entity (Firestone, 2016). For instance, if you one has to deliver electric shocks to two strangers namely John and Amos. The electric shock will actually lead to an equal amount of pain in each and every affected individual. According to Singers principle, both John and Amos interests of not feeling the pain must be equally given consideration and therefore one should not take precedence over the other one. As a result, it does not necessarily matter morally to whom the shock is delivered. On the other way, one will need to make a decision as to whom to first deliver the shock, may be through using flipping of coins. The Equal Consideration of Interests also implies that the pain which an animal feels actually matters as much as when such pain is felt by humans especially if such pain hurts as much (Khazaal Almiron, 2016). This thus means that how bad the suffering and the pain are does not entirely depend on a species which experiences such pain and therefore in case there is a moral conflict, then one should consider both the human and animal interests on an equal basis. 3. There are various circumstances under which the balance of interests may genuinely favor the non-humans. For instance, bestowing of the moral benefits such as rights on animals that are aimed at protecting them from exploitation by the human population is a good example of how the balancing of interests can benefit non-humans (Garner, 2016). Apart from that, obeying of the rights which animals have such as the right of animals not to be abused by individuals and respecting such rights is also an example of how balancing of interests can greatly benefit non-humans such as animals (Grant, 2016). In addition to that, human beings should not exploit animals but instead, they should support the rights of animals even though not all animals in the world have similar rights. According to me, am comfortable with this possibility because even though we can use animals for our own benefits, it is important to ensure that we also respect their rights. 4. I dont agree with Singers assertion that in circumstances where human actions make the non-humans to suffer, then such suffering should also be equated to the suffering experienced by human beings. This is because human beings are superior to animals and therefore there is no way that animals can be equated to the animals (Strang, 2016). When God created the world, humans were given the mandate over everything in the world and thus animals and other non-humans are also under the control of the human race. 5. I cannot agree with Singers contention because the idea that speciesism is actually intrinsically linked or associated to the idea that animals and humans possess the same moral value is wrong. Despite the fact that animals and humans belong to the same animal species, this should not be construed to imply that the same moral value should be assigned to all the animal species, human beings included (Leech, 2016). This implies that the idea of speciesism is truly unavoidable. There is thus no way that the issue of commercial meat production can stop. Works Cited Braun, B., 2008. Native Americans during the time ofthe early settlers where treated very badly. Europeansdid what they wanted with the Native Americans, andwhen a group of Native Americans would stand up forthemselves, the European would quickly put them down. The Native Americans bow and arrows where no matchfor the Europeans guns and cannon balls. When theEuropeans guns didnt work for the Europeans, the diseasethey bought killed the Native Americans even moreeffectively. In a poem by Louise Enrich called Dear JohnWayne a line from a cowboy and Indian movie states theposition of many European settlers in the AmericasEverything we see belongs to us. Native Americans did not like the way they were beingtreated. Every generation that passes, there would be fewerand fewer Native Americans around the Americas. NativeAmericans were dying like flies flying around bug spraymist. If it were not a war (The Fr ench and Indian war) thatwere killing them off it would be European disease (Cowand Small pox). The Native Americans saw what theEuropeans were doing to their lives, they wanted their oldway of life, and they wanted the Europeans to go away. Inthe movie Smoke Signals a line that was said by acharacter called Arnold Joseph represents the feelings ofthe Native Americans Poof! The white people are gone. The Europeans were relentless in their attempts to get rid ofthe Native Americas Come on boys we got them(DearJohn Wayne), was the attitude the Europeans felt about theNative Americans. All the Europeans wanted from theNative Americans were their land, their gold or their labor. Unfortunately for the Native Americans, the Europeanssucceeded in taking advantage of the Native Americansand in the end the Europeans did get them. Native Americans did not understand European ideology. Native Americans had no idea why the Europeans couldfight for land, Death makes us owners of nothing (DearJohn Wayne) is what the Native Americans believed. Theyalso couldnt understand on how one person or group canown land since he or she could not own the sky. The Native Americans were getting sick and tried of beingoppressed so one glorious day the Native Americansdecided to ban together to stop the oppression. Sometimes its a good day to die (Smoke Signals) wasan idea that was present on that day. That day was whenthe Battle of Wounded Knee happened. Unfortunately forthe Natives Americans, they lost that battle and NativeAmerican resistant was shattered. Native Americans have been through a lot in America. They were the first ones here and they still are here. But theproblem is that Native Americans are still treated withdisrespect. There are still a lot of prejudice and racismagainst the Native Americans. I believe that if a race couldsurvive after all the wars and disease that the NativeAmericans have been faced with, they should be respectedand not be treated with disrespect. judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9172967280737999510.post-51900270686780758002019-11-28T03:54:00.001-08:002019-11-28T03:54:04.406-08:00NAME Essays (648 words) - Fiction, Beekeeping, Animal Migration NAME INSTRUCTOR COURSE DATE In the opening section of What the Crow Said, neighborhood excellence, Vera Lang, is impregnated by a swarm of honey bees. Impregnated. Swarm of honey bees. In any event Kroetsch begins the way he expects to proceed. Vera's pregnancy is however the first of numerous odd occasions in the Municipality of Bigknife, arranged on the outskirt of Saskatchewan and Alberta, where Canadian prairies meet and converge with Kroetschian bewilderness. Bigknife highlights, in addition to other things, a loquacious, foulness heaving crow; an improvised card amusement that keeps going 151 days; a rash of odd pregnancies; a neighborhood newspaperman who can discontinuously "recollect" the future; an unnaturally drawn out winter; and a war pronounced by the men of Bigknife against the sky. Kroetsch presents a significant thrown of characters. They're extensively outlined, however that is not a deformitythat is essentially the sort of novel it is. It's not a perpetually subsiding corridor of mirrors, with Marquez-like cognizance as its protest. Rather it's a crazy embroidered artwork, two measurements brimming with impregnation, delight, and poop, and bunches of other - actions other than. That is the manner by which What the Crow Said, however just short, abounds with characters and floods with episode. Kroetsch rushes the peruser past the general population and happenings of Bigknife, archiving epic strangeness in rundown sentences that are perfect works of art of comic pressure. ( Bernhardt , pg.15) The characters are reasonably to one side. There's the region's cleric, Father Basil, who's under the inquisitive impression that Bigknife's stuck in perpetual winter in light of the fact that "the world needs adequate diffusive compel to keep up its roundness". At that point there's Martin Lang, the no-account spouse of Tiddy. He stops to death at an early stage, however discontinuously frequents the region as an apparition. Tiddy, in the meantime , brings up six little girlsVera, Gertrude, Rose, Anna-Marie, Rita, and Cathywho are most prominent for the peculiar way of their pregnancies. There's additionally John Skandl, the nearby ice-cutter, who trumps equals in the journey for the widowed Tiddy's turn in marriage by building a beacon made of ice. Skandl's central opponent, and the nearest thing to a hero in What the Crow Said, is Gus Leibhaber, the editorial manager and printer of the nearby cloth, the Big Indian Signal. Leib's persuaded that Gutenberg's innovation of the printing press has made memory outdated. Probably, that is the reason he recalls the future, yet has just a fumbly get a handle on the past. ( Oppenheim , pg.23) There's such a great amount to adore about this novelthe glad vitality of its absurdity and development; its relish for words, stories, and jokes; the jar of its intermittent savageries; and the way it adjusts the messiness of its cleverness with the height of its keenness. The end section is a visit de constrain. The portrayal clicks into current state as the storyteller watches the Lang cultivate, noticing the doings of character after character. Fortresses are broken when the male and female principals are at long last joined together. In Tiddy's bed, man and lady, over a significant time span, sex and passing, body and mind, dialect and reality at last meet up, however the novel's last sentence portrays hurting, powerful partition. Conjurer, craftsman, and director, Kroetsch brings his story's dissimilar components together, catching minutes, recollections, and subjects, and meshing them into a riveted, taking off ensemble of life. Anything this straight to the point and clearthis brimming with raving exaggeration, rambunctious joy, and bounteous crappingwill essentially repulse a few peruses . Armies Commanders: British General Sir Herbert PlumerLieutenant General Sir Alexander GodleyLieutenant General Sir Alexander Hamilton-GordonLieutenant General Sir Thomas Morland212,000 men (12 divisions) Germans General Sixt von Armin126,000 men (5 divisions) Battle of Messines - Background: In the late spring of 1917, with the French offensive along the Aisne bogging down, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, commander of the British Expeditionary Force, sought a way to relieve pressure on his ally. Having conducted an offensive in the Arras sector of the lines in April and early May, Haig turned to General Sir Herbert Plumer who commanded British forces around Ypres. Since early 1916, Plumer had been developing plans for an attack on Messines Ridge southeast of the town. The capture of the ridge would remove a salient in the British lines as well as give them control of the highest ground in the area. Battle of Messines - Preparations: Authorizing Plumer to move forward with an assault on the ridge, Haig began to view the attack as a prelude to a much larger offensive in the Ypres area. A meticulous planner, Plumer had been preparing to take ridge for over a year and his engineers had dug twenty-one mines under the German lines. Constructed 80-120 feet below the surface, the British mines were dug in the face of intense German counter-mining activities. Once completed, they were packed with 455 tonnes of ammonal explosives. Battle of Messines - Dispositions: Opposing Plumers Second Army was General Sixt von Armins Fourth Army which consisted of five divisions arrayed to provide an elastic defense along the length of their line. For the assault, Plumer intended to send forward the three corps of his army with Lieutenant General Sir Thomas Morlands X Corps in the north, Lieutenant General Sir Alexander Hamilton-Gordons IX Corps in the center, and Lieutenant General Sir Alexander Godleys II ANZAC Corps in the south. Each corps was to make the attack with three divisions, with a fourth kept in reserve. Battle of Messines - Taking the Ridge: Plumer commenced his preliminary bombardment on May 21 with 2,300 guns and 300 heavy mortars pounding the German lines. The firing ended at 2:50 AM on June 7. As quiet settled over the lines, the Germans raced to their defensive position believing that an attack was forthcoming. At 3:10 AM, Plumer ordered nineteen of the mines detonated. Destroying much of the German front lines, the resulting explosions killed around 10,000 soldiers and were heard as far away as London. Moving forward behind a creeping barrage with tank support, Plumers men assaulted all three sides of the salient. Making rapid gains, they collected large numbers of dazed German prisoners and achieved their first set of objectives within three hours. In the center and south, British troops captured the villages of Wytschaete and Messines. Only in the north was the advance slightly delayed due to the need to cross the Ypres-Comines canal. By 10:00 AM, the Second Army had reached its goals for the first phase of the assault. Briefly pausing, Plumer advanced forty artillery batteries and his reserve divisions. Renewing the attack at 3:00 PM, his troops secured their second phase objectives within an hour. Having accomplished the offensives objectives, Plumers men consolidated their position. The next morning, the first German counterattacks began around 11:00 AM. Though the British had little time to prepare new defensive lines, they were able to repel the German assaults with relative ease. General von Armin continued attacks until June 14, though many were badly disrupted by British artillery fire. Battle of Messine - Aftermath: A stunning success, Plumers attack at Messines was nearly flawless in its execution and resulted in relatively few casualties by World War I standards. In the fighting, British forces incurred 23,749 casualties, while the Germans suffered around 25,000. It was one of the few times in the war when the defenders took heavier losses than the attackers. Plumers victory at Messines succeeded in achieving its goals, but led Haig to over-inflate his expectations for the subsequent Passchendaele offensive which was launched in the area that July. The pressing concern is how this pollution is affecting cloud formations and how the loss of those clouds may be causing a shift in the weather patterns that could threaten the entire Amazonian ecosystem. Scientists Ilan Koren, and Lorraine Remer from the Weizmann Institute collaborated with Karla Longo from the Brazilian Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies to construct a research model to better understand how smoke changes clouds in the Amazon. Smoke changes the size and number of cloud droplets, which affects the cloud density and the visual ââ¬Å"brightnessâ⬠of cloud formation. In theory this smoke layer, stabilizes and creates layers within atmosphere that directly suppresses updrafts that fuel cloud formation. Clouds are better at reflecting sunlight back into space than smoke, the scientistââ¬â¢s hypothesis considers that fires in the Amazon likely allow more solar energy than normal to enter the Earthââ¬â¢s climate system and are contributing to far reaching examples of climate change. The scientists collected data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) system at NASAââ¬â¢s Goddard Space Center. The MODIS satellite data was compiled and analyzed over an 8 year period (from 1998 to 2006). The research initially focused on how smoke influenced clouds on a day to day basis. But, as the study progressed the scientists noted that since 2000, there were large fluctuations in the density and proliferation of smoke between the years. Some years were relatively clean, and in other years the atmosphere was being highly polluted by the smoke from the man caused fires. When this was noted the scientists bi-furcated the research and looked at additional MODIS data from AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) to look at look at the daily and monthly averages in the number of judyjordan197http://www.blogger.com/profile/17670203636252069052noreply@blogger.com0
