Jerome has the psychological burden of being ‘imperfect’ in a world where the society only accepts individuals with perfect DNA’s to achieve great things. . One of the central images in the film is the staircase in Vincent and Jerome’s home. Do you notice anything about this staircase? Is there any significance to Jerome’s struggle to climb it? The staircase resembles a DNA strand; the double helix (one of the biggest symbols in the film). The staircase, and the fact that Jerome/Eugene struggled to climb them, represents his struggle to overcome his physical limits (wheelchair), just like Vincent had to overcome his physical limits (bad DNA). 7. Is there really anything wrong with the Director’s position that Gattaca has the right â€Å"recruitment philosophy†? Is the Director right that â€Å"no one exceeds his potential†? From a business point it is considered acceptable; in order to have a successful business, you must gather the elites of the individuals. But in a society, this is considered discrimination. This is relatable to our societies because we discriminate against race, genders, IQ, etc, and is one of today’s most frowned-upon discussions, even though we all discriminate in some way without realizing it. 8. Does the medical technician fail to do his job by letting Vincent on to the space ship? I honestly don’t believe so, because we learn that the doctor’s son has a genetic heart defect, like Vincent. And the fact that the doctor let Vincent on the space ship, along with the quote that â€Å"his son admires Vincent† suggests that his son also wants to go up to space someday, and because his son looks up to Vincent, refusing to let Vincent on the space ship because of his defect would be like refusing to let his son carry out his dreams. 9. What are Vincent’s relationships with his father and mother like? How does it affect Vincent’s life? Vincent’s family, including his brother, considered him to be chronically ill. His parents, especially his mother, became very protective of him and every childhood illness was treated as it was life threatening because of all the possibilities for multiple conditions, diseases, disorders, etc. This affected Vincent’s life because he grew up to want to prove to everybody that despite the problems and possibilities, he could still succeed. Also, sometimes we make our own happiness, by the choices we make or the experiences we go through. 3. Vincent: We now have discrimination down to a science. This is said because in the film, nobody cares what you look like; all they need is your DNA (urine, hair sample, eyelashes, etc) for identification. If your DNA shows that you have a heart problem, for example, you will not be qualified for the job at Gattaca. 4. Jerome: I got the better end of the deal. I only lent you my body you lent me your dream. Jerome believed that without a working body, he couldn’t accomplish his dream of getting a â€Å"gold medal† because of his physical limitation, so he gave up parts of his identity and genetic profile to Vincent, so that Vincent could fulfill his dreams of being a â€Å"valid†. In a way, Jerome lived through Vincent, and in a way, Jerome’s dreams were coming true just like Vincent’s were coming true, and Jerome received the satisfaction in knowing that Vincent’s dreams were fulfilled in the end. 5. Vincent: [voiceover] For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess Im suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe Im not leaving maybe Im going home. 6. Antonio: Son, the only way youre going to see the inside of a space shuttle is if youre cleaning it. Antonio said this to Vincent because he knew about his heart problems, therefore Antonio knew that Vincent wouldn’t be able/capable of getting into the Gattaca space program as an astronaut because of his heart problem. Vincent: Blood has no nationality I think this suggests that blood is blood – despite the artificial and genetic changes we can impose on ourselves, we all basically have the same blood. In this movie, people are discriminated by their future abilities based on their DNA/blood. But in reality, people are judged because of their race, features, looks, money value, etc. So, simplistically, this quote is saying that we are all the same on the inside – we are all composed of genetic material and really, there is no need for discrimination. 9. Dr. Lamar: I still havent told you about my son have I? Hes a big fan of yours The doctor mentions his son early in the movie, and at the end of the movie we find out that the son is also engineered yet flawed in his DNA. The doctor repeatedly mentions his son which suggests that the doctor has always known about Vincent being a ‘borrowed ladder’. 10. Vincent: You are the authority on what is not possible, arent you Irene? Theyve got you looking for any flaw, that after a while thats all you see. For what its worth, Im here to tell you that it is possible. It is possible. This quote shows that society has convinced Irene that because she is flawed in one way, she is not worth anything; that she is not and will not be capable of achieving her dreams because of that one flaw. Because of the genetic â€Å"defect†, what’s on the outside does not matter. Her dreams, hopes, ambitions do not matter because she will be unable to achieve them, just because of that one flaw. Vincent is trying to show her that she is worth more than she thinks, and that it IS possible to overcome that flaw, because he is doing just that. 11. Vincent: Its funny, you work so hard, you do everything you can to get away from a place, and when you finally get your chance to leave, you find a reason to stay. 12. Vincent: Ill never understand what possessed my mother to put her faith in Gods hands, rather than her local geneticist. Television And Society Television In our society, we like to think of the television as nothing more of a form of entertainment. But do we really believe that? Maybe when television was first introduced, that is all that it was. That certainly is not the case today. It tells us what to buy, what to wear, how to act, even how to think. In other words, people are relying too much on television as a source of information. There are very few television stations that are black oriented. This hurts blacks because it causes them to lose race pride and to conform. More and more, they lose their pride and start taking in more information that whites provide to them. On television, there are white women with straight, blond hair, tiny noses, and a skinny figure. This is the ?worst sort of Americanism?(Early, 225). When a black woman straightens her hair, this is because she thinks that she will look better if she does this. But who tells her this? The commercials on television that now have black women who do not look so black anymore. This connects to one of the essays that I read by stating, ?when offered a choice between a black doll and a white doll, little black girls invariably chose the white doll because they thought it ?prettier? '(Early, 226). This causes psychological damage to black girls because they will never think they are pretty enough until they are white. Toni Morrison writes, ?Adults, older girls, shops, magazines, newspapers, window signs----all the world had agreed that a blue eyed, yellow-haired, pink-skinned doll was what every girl treasured.? (Early, 225) They took this information in from things just like television, which are all run by whites in a white world. Television is starting to get better for blacks in some ways, but also even worse. There are stations that are not trying to unite the blacks and move ahead. Black Entertainment Television is a very good example of trying to unite the black community. Just look at the title of the station. If you are black, you are much more likely to tune into B.E.T. than if you were any other race. So this station knows what their following is, and through shows on their station and commercials, they try to get blacks to think the way the station wants them to think. For example, I saw a commercial on B.E.T. about the presidential election, but instead of including both the democratic symbol (donkey) and the republican symbol (elephant), they only included the donkey. This is telling the viewers that the only choice for blacks is democrats; the republicans have nothing to offer them. This is good because it helps the blacks to unite and all make the same choice, but it bothers me more because I fee l that blacks should explore the issues and make a choice for themselves, not just listen to what the television is telling them. This hurts blacks because it has them not thinking for themselves. Paige is someone who I had known for a long time. She lived across the street from me ever since I was five and we have stayed close friends the whole time. I always thought that she was very pretty, but she thought otherwise. She felt that her nose was too long, and it made her look ugly. I could understand why she thought this because all you ever see on commercials and fashion shows is beautiful women with tiny little noses and they were considered beautiful. She did not look at anything other than those models on TV as being pretty. She felt she would never find the right guy for her because her nose would turn them off. I know this sounds ridiculous, but she really believed it, and nothing would change her thinking unless she had a nose job. The Three Deaths in Hintons The Outsiders Essay -- The Outsiders

During the course of the novel â€Å"The Outsiders† there are three linked deaths that change the relationships between the Curtis brothers in many different ways. The soc, Bob Sheldon, dies first. When Ponyboy and Johnny flee after Darry hit Ponyboy they run into their rivals Bob and his best friend Randy Adderson. Bob takes Ponyboy and starts drowning him until Johnny gets his switchblade out and kills Bob. After this, Johnny dies. Dally (a greaser with a criminal record) sends Ponyboy and Johnny to an abandoned church so they can hide after what they did. When they go to leave after a few days, the church catches on fire with a few elementary school kids trapped inside, so they go into the church to save them. When Johnny gets the last kid out, a piece of the roof falls on his back, breaking it. The last death is Dally. After Johnny dies, Dally goes crazy and robs a store. The police chase him and shoot him down because he pulled out a gun at them. As you can see at the beg inning of the novel, the brothers are constantly getting into arguments about stupid little things, but after Darry hits Ponyboy, things change. After these deaths, Ponyboy’s grades start dropping and he starts to lose sight of himself. Him and Darry get into many more arguments until Sodapop Curtis tells them to promise to stop arguing because it’s tearing him apart. They both agree and it makes their relationship really strong at the end of the novel. Although the Curtis brothers do not have a close relationship at the beginning of the novel, after experiencing the deaths of Bob, Johnny, and Dally, it makes their relationship stronger. The first death that occurs is of Bob Sheldon. After Ponyboy comes home from a late light with some of the soc girls, Darry ... ...n they are in the hospital when Johnny, Ponyboy and Dally return from Windrixville and Johnny is dying. Ponyboy realizes that Darry does actually care about him; he is just strict because he wants him to be better. At that point Ponyboy thinks that everything is going to be all right because he understands Darry now, but it just goes back to normal with all of the arguing. Finally Sodapop steps in after Dally dies and everyone is sad and feeling helpless. He tells Darry and Ponyboy to promise to never argue again because he doesn’t like it, and they agree. All of these conflicts in the novel â€Å"The Outsiders† started with Darry hitting Ponyboy in the face. Example: Overnight, the news ran through Chinatown. Perfect Meiying had given herself to a Japanese boy. She had to do something and failed terribly. She had bled to death. Two ambulance arrived, and a crowd gathered to watch them take away the bundled body. Explanation: When the war between China and Japan becomes more and more intensely, every Chinese people including the aboard hate Japan because Japan invade their land and attack their compatriots. But Meiying, who is a wonderful girl in Chinatown, has a boyfriend as a Japanese people. In that time, it is such a terrible thing because the Chinese people believe that people who has communication with Japanese is a traitor. Meiying keeps the secret for such a long time but finally it is exposed so she can not be under this hard pressure and also don't want to Implicate her parents so she decides to kill herself. So at that time, people think all Japanese people are bad and harmful and attribute them into a category which is bad.
